What is Electricity?
In chapter 11 of class 6 science, we studied light and shadow. Now, we study light(electricity). Electricity is a form of energy produced by moving charged particles in a conductor material. We will further study these terms, charged particles and conductors. Electricity plays a vital role in our daily lives. It helps to charge our phones and most machines.
Important terms in electricity: -
- Charge Particle: Matter is made of small particles, which are called atoms. Atoms contain electrons and protons. Electrons have a negative charge, and protons have a positive charge. The imbalance between electron and proton produces electric charge. If the number of electrons is more than the proton, then it produces a negative charge, and if the number of protons is more than the electrons, then it has a positive charge.
- Electric Current: –
- Current: The flow of particles in a direction is called Current.
- Electric Current: The flow of electric particles in a direction is called electric current.
- Its SI unit is Amperes (A)
- Electric current always flows positively to the negative terminal.
- Voltage: Voltage is the force that pushes the electric-charged particle. The higher the voltage, the higher the particle’s speed in a circuit. It is denoted by V.
Electric Circuit – Definition and Components: -
An electric circuit is the path where the electricity flows and does its work like lighting the blub. There are two types of electric circuits.
- Close Circuit: – in this circuit electric flow does its work and gets back to another terminal of source of electricity.
- Open Circuit: – In this circuit electricity does not pass.
Components of Electric Circuit: -
Source of electricity: –
- For the Source of electricity, we are using a cell. It sends the current through the circuit.
- The cell or battery has two terminals, one is positive (+), and the second is negative (-). Which is a must for current flow in a circuit.
Conducting Wires: –
We connect the wires to the cell or battery. When the electric particles flow then conducting wire helps to flow them in the circuit. Conducting wires are made up of Matels Which are good conductors of electricity. Wires connect the circuit and provide the pathway to flowing electric current.
Electric Device (e.g., Bulb): –
An electric device is the most important part of an electric circuit. It is the part of the circuit where electricity is used to perform their work. It is connected to a conducting wire. An electric device is the only part of the circuit that converts electric energy into another form of energy.
Switch: –
The switch is used in a circuit to control the electric current and is used according to its requirements. It is used to open and close electric circuits. When it is used for an open circuit it stops the flow of electric current, when it is used for a closed circuit then it allows it to pass the current and make a complete circuit.
How do these components work together?
- First of all, the source of electricity produces the electric current then it flows from conducting wires.
- After passing the conducting wire it comes to the switch, the switch is open then it stops here.
- If the switch is in close mode, then it goes to blub. The filament of the blub gets lighting and passes current through another terminal of the blub.
- After then connecting the conducting wire, it gets back to the cell.
Conductors and Insulators
In electric flow most important is the type of medium. Every material has different properties. So according to the different properties of materials, we divide them into two types according to the current flow.
- Conductors: –
These are the materials that allow the passing of electric current. All metals are conductors, and some non-metals, like graphite, are conductors.
- Insulators: –
These are the materials that do not allow the passing of electric current. Wood, plastic, rubber, and clothes are examples of insulators.
