What is Respiration?
The process of Releasing energy from food in our body is called Respiration. In the human body, glucose and all other organic molecules are broken down to produce energy. The produced energy in respiration is stored in ATP form. Cells use this stored energy for various body activities, like growth and functions.
Type of Respiration: –
Respiration has two types
- Aerobic Respiration
- Anaerobic Respiration

Aerobic Respiration: -
In this type of respiration, glucose, and other organic molecules are broken down in the presence of oxygen to release energy. In this process, glucose completely breaks down into carbon dioxide and water.
Chemical Equation: –
GLUCOSE + OXYGEN = CARBON DIOXIDE + WATER + ENERGY(ATP)
- Aerobic respiration is done in the mitochondria of the cell.
Humans, plants, and plants at night are the example of Aerobic Respiration.
Anaerobic Respiration: -
This process of respiration is done without oxygen. In Anaerobic respiration glucose particularly breaks down and releases less energy.
Byproducts: This respiration produces lactic acid in animals and humans and alcohol and Carbon Dioxide in plants.
Chemical Equation in Yeast: – GLUCOSE = CARBON DIOXIDE + ALCOHOL + ENERGY(LESS)
- Anaerobic respiration is done in the cytoplasm of cells.
Difference between Respiration and Breathing
Breathing is the physical process by which our body takes oxygen and extracts carbon dioxide. Breathing has two parts inhalation and exhalation.
Inhalation: – in this step, we take oxygen-rich air inside our body for respiration.
Exhalation: – In this process, we extract carbon dioxide-rich air from our body.
How many times inhalation and exhalation are done in a minute is called breathing rate. A healthy and normal person’s breathing rate is 15-18. When we work hard then it increases up to 25 times per minute.
Respiration is the chemical process in which glucose breaks down to produce energy.
Organs Involved in Respiration
In Class 7 Science Chapter 10 Notes Respiration in Organism, it is important to know which organs are used in respiration. As we know different parts of different organisms are used in respiration some important are discussed below: –
Respiration in Humans: -
Nose and Nasal Passages
This is the first and most important step toward respiration. The nose intakes the oxygen and the nasal has small hair that purifies the air and strop dust particles to enter in lungs.
Trachea (Windpipe)
The trachea is the tube that connects the nose and mouth to the bronchi. It allows air to pass through the lungs.
Bronchi and Bronchioles
The trachea is divided into two bronchi (left and right bronchi). It passes air toward the lungs. Bronchi divide into many small branches called Bronchioles. It passes gases to the Alveoli.
Alveoli
This is the main organ that functions for the exchange of gases dissolves oxygen in blood and extracts carbon dioxide from it.
Lungs
The lungs are the most important organ in respiration. They are the houses of Alveoli, which exchange gases between the air and blood. The right lung has three lobes, and the left has two lobes to accommodate the heart.
Diaphragm
This is the most important organ. It separates the abdominal part from the chest part. In contrast, it creates a vacuum when we inhale. When it returns to its normal position, it pushes carbon dioxide out.
Respiration in Plants: -
Plants are slightly different from animals in point of respiration. All cells of plants play important roles in respiration, some important roles are discussed below: –
Stomata
Stomata are tiny pores that are present on the leaves and stems of plants. It allows gas for respiration and plays an important role in exchanging gases for respiration.
Leaf Cells
Leaf cells have mitochondria. As we study here aerobic respiration occurs.
Roots
It contains oxygen from the soil.
Respiration in Other Organisms: -
Fish: Fish use gills to respirate. Gills are used to exchange gases for respiration. Gill extracts oxygen from water.
Amphibians (Skin and Lungs)
Amphibians, like Frogs, use skin and lungs for respiration. In water, frogs use skin for respiration, and skin is used for respiration in the open.
Earthworms
Earthworms use skin for respiration.
Cockroach: –
A small opening on the side of the cockroach. This opening is called a spiracle. All other insects also use this for respiration. The network of air tubes in insects is called tracheae. This is used for gas exchange.
Cellular Respiration
In this respiration, cells break down glucose to produce energy as ATP. This energy is used for various cellular activities in our body. Cellular respiration is done mainly in three ways – Glycolysis, Krebs cycle, and Electron Transport Chain.
The chemical equation for Cellular respiration
Glucose (C₆H₁₂O₆)+Oxygen (O₂)→Carbon Dioxide (CO₂)+Water (H₂O)+ATP (Energy)
Total energy produced in all three steps is: –
- Glycolysis – 2 ATP
- Krebs cycle – 2 ATP
- Electron Transport Chain – 34 ATP
A total of 38 ATP is produced in Aerobic conditions.
