In Chapter 10 of Class 6 Science, we studied motion and distance measurement. In Class 6 Science Chapter 11 Notes NCERT Light Shadows and Reflections, we discussed light, shadow, and light reflection
Light: -
Light is a form of energy. Light helps us to see the objects. Without lights, we can’t see anything. In our daily lives, we see some objects like the sun, torch who produce light but some don’t produce light. Those objects that produce or give out light are called Luminous. Luminous objects produce light and light strikes the non-luminous objects and reflect to our eyes.
Some important facts about Light: -
- Light always travels in a straight line.
- No medium is required for travel it can be travelled in a vacuum too.
- Light has some properties like reflection, refraction, etc.
Source of Light: -
- Natural Source: – Those sources of light that produce the light naturally. Example – Sun
- Artificial Source: – Those sources which are made by artificial methods. Example – Electric Blub, Torch
Speed of light: -
The speed of light is 299792km/s in a vacuum. The speed of light is the highest in this universe.

Shadow -
Shadow formation depends on the nature of the object whom light strikes. According to the different properties of objects of light pass, we divide it into three types. These three types are discussed in chapter 4 class 6 science. Let’s discuss all of these types: –
- Opaque – these are those objects that do not allow light to pass from themselves.
- Transparent – These are those objects that allow passing light from themselves.
- Translucent– These are those objects that allow to pass the light partially from themselves.
Formation of Shadow: -
When an opaque object blocks the path of light then the shadow of the opaque object falls on a surface behind that object.
Key Factors in Shadow Formation: -
- Light Source: – light is most important for shadow formation it could be a natural or artificial source.
- Opaque object: – Opaque objects have properties that do not allow the light to pass from them so it is most important for shadow formation.
- Surface for shadow: – After light strikes to opaque object there is must need surface for shadow formation
Size of Shadow: -
The size of the shadow depends on various factors which are explained below: –
- Light Source Position: The position of a light source is the most important factor in the size of a shadow. If a light source is close to an opaque object, then the size of the shadow is large but if a source of light is far from opaque then the size of the shadow will be short.
- Object Size: – if the size of an object is large then the shadow size will be large but if the size is small then the size of the shadow will be short.
Reflection of Light: -
When light strikes a smooth surface(mirror) and it bounces back, this bounce back of light is called reflection of light. Reflection plays the most important role in our life to see the objects.
- Incident Ray: – The light that strikes the smooth surface is called incident ray.
- Reflect Ray: – After striking a smooth surface the light reflects or bounces back is called a reflect ray.
