Table of Contents
What is Air?
The mixture of many gases and tiny dust particles surrounding us is called air, the most important thing for all living beings. We can only feel the air but are unable to see. According to place and temperature, water drops are also in the air. Many gases are present in the air with dust and water. some common gases are oxygen, nitrogen, and Carbon Dioxide

Composition of Air
As we know air is a mixture of many gases. In the air, all gases have different ratios, and different work is done in our lives. Some important gases are explained below with their percentage and work in our lives.
- Nitrogen: Nitrogen is a major part of the air, making up 78% of it. It does not directly affect our lives, but nitrogen is helpful for plant growth.
- Oxygen: – Oxygen is 2nd largest gas who present in the air. This is most important for humans and all living beings. Oxygen is needed in respiration, making plant food, and burning. It makes up 21% of the air.
- Argon (Ar): – Argon is Noble gas so it is non-reactive gas. Â In Air Argon makes up 0.93%.
- Carbon Dioxide (COâ‚‚):- Carbon Dioxide makes up 0.04% of the air. With the help of this gas, plants make their food in the presence of sunlight.
- Other Gases: – Neon, helium krypton, and some other gases are also in the air but all of them are in very small quantities.
- Water and Dust: – along with gas dust and water are also present in the air.
Summary of the Composition of Air:
- Nitrogen (Nâ‚‚): 78%
- Oxygen (Oâ‚‚): 21%
- Argon (Ar): 0.93%
- Carbon Dioxide (COâ‚‚): 0.04%
- Water Vapor (Hâ‚‚O): 0-4%
- Other gases (Neon, Helium, Krypton, etc.): Trace amounts
- Dust and Pollutants: Varies
Layers of Air (Atmosphere): -
Our earth is surrounded by air. According to different temperatures and features of air, it divides into layers. Each layer has its specifications, provides oxygen to us, and protects us from harmful rays from the sun. some important layers of air are explained below: –
- Troposphere: This layer is 8-15km from the earth’s surface. It is the closest layer to Earth, and all activity, such as clouds and rain, occurs in this layer.
- Stratosphere: This layer is 15-50km from the earth’s surface. It contains the ozone layer, which protects us from ultraviolet rays.
- Mesosphere: – This layer is 50-85km from the earth’s surface. This is the coldest layer in the atmosphere.
- Thermosphere: – This layer is 85-600km from the earth’s surface. Thermosphere is the hottest layer in the atmosphere.
- Exosphere: This layer is 600-10000km from the earth’s surface. It is the outermost layer in the atmosphere. Satellites, including communication and weather satellites, orbit in this layer.
Properties of Air: -
- Air Has Mass: Air weighs something and can be measured.
- Air Occupies Space: Air fills all spaces and containers.
- Air Exerts Pressure: Air pushes in all directions, creating pressure.
- Air is Composed of Different Gases: It’s a mixture of gases, including nitrogen, oxygen, and carbon dioxide.
- Air is Necessary for Combustion: Oxygen in the air is needed for burning.
- Air is a Poor Conductor of Heat: Air insulates and doesn’t conduct heat well.
- Air Can Be Compressed: Gases like air can be squeezed into smaller spaces.
- Air Can Be Heated or Cooled: Temperature changes affect how air behaves.
Air and Its Importance: -
Air is the most important for human beings and other factors around us. Some importance of air is explained below: –
- Breathing: – As we study above air contains oxygen gas. Humans and animals require oxygen for breathing. Without oxygen human and animal life is not possible.
- Photosynthesis: – plant make their food by using carbon dioxide in the presence of sunlight.
- Fuel Burning: – oxygen is a must for burning.
- Pollination: – pollination in plant air plays an important role.
- Water Cycle: – in the water cycle air plays an important role. In evaporation and cloud movement, air plays an important role.
How to Keep Air Clean:
We notice air pollution is increasing day by day. Of air pollution, we face many problems in our life and nature. The main reason for air pollution is humans and its much-used scientific discovery. Some steps toward air cleaning are discussed below: –
- Tree: – As we know trees produce oxygen and consume carbon dioxide. Trees are also helpful in the water cycle so by planting more and more trees we can improve our air quality.
- By using public transport: Burning fuel like petrol and diesel produces carbon monoxide, which is the most important factor in air pollution. By using public transport, we can reduce the burning of fuel.
- Using Green energy: We can reduce air pollution by using green energy produced by solar and wind.
