Class 6 Science Chapter 9 notes NCERT: The Living Organisms Characteristics and Habitats
In our daily lives, we observe every organism having different characteristics and a different way of living their life according to their body and nature specifications. Nature of all organisms depends on different atmospheric habitat conditions. We notice some organisms are living on land and some are in water. All having different body shapes and different body activities. According to their habitats, we divide into two major parts, which are explained below:
Habitat: Where organisms are living is called habitat.
Terrestrial Habitats: in these habitats, organisms are living on land. Examples: grassland, desert, mountains, etc.
Aquatic Habitats: In this habitat, organisms are living in water. Examples: ponds, lakes, sea rivers, etc.
This is an overview of major habitats. Now we will discuss details of the above habitats.
Terrestrial habitats:
Deserts – In this habitat, some specific conditions are present, which are explained below:
- Lack of water: due to lack of water, not too much greenery is present and organisms have low water-consuming capacity.
- High temperature: Due to lack of water and greenery, the temperature is high.
- Small leaf plants: We know there is a lack of water, so plants having small leaves reduce the loss of water during sunlight and photosynthesis, and plants having long roots get water from deep in the earth.
- Plant leaves surface is not smooth. It is the same because it reduces loss of water and is capable of storing water as much.
- Desert animals like camels having long legs: We know the temperature of the desert is high, so protect from warm sand. They have long legs, but if we notice some animals like snakes and mice having short legs, It is because they eat their food in a hole and come out at night.

Mountains Regions – Specifications of these habitats are the following:
- Plants: In mountain habitats, we notice plants having cone shapes, and their leaves are having a special shape. It is because of mountain area snow and speed wing blow, so the shape of the plant easily slides in the snow and neglects the flow of air.
- Animals: animals in mountains having thick skin and a heavy fur on their body. It is because of protection from snow and the low temperature effect.
Grass Land Habitat
It is the most common habitat for organisms. In this habitat, every organism has a special character to keep them alive. If we notice deeply about Lion. You see eyes on the middle side of the forehead; it will help to focus on their target (prey), and its body color helps it to hide in dry grass. On the other hand, if you notice the deer’s strong teeth, help him to chiwe the hard plants. The eyes on the deer on the corner side of the forehead will help to a wide angle view. Long ears help to listen to the movement of predators.
Predator: These are those animals who attack other animals for their food.
Prey: These are those animals like deer who are used as food for other animals like lions.
Aquatic Habitats
These are those habitats where organisms are living in water, not on land. Some aquatic habitats are explained below:
Oceans: –
In chapter 8 class 6 science, we discuss fish body shape and how it helps to move in water. But some animals who do not have streamline body shape, when they move in water, will get their bodies into streamline body shape to move. Most of the animals take breath from their gills, but some animals, like whales and dolphins, who have no gills, will take breath from nostrils or blowholes, which are present on the upper part of the body, so they came out of the water for a few seconds.
Characteristics of organisms:
Class 6 Science Chapter 9 notes NCERT solutions The living organism characteristics and habits we notice in our surroundings are that some things are growing and some are still the same, but both are important for each other. According to their different things, it is divided into two categories: biotic and abiotic components.
Biotic: These are those components that are living. Examples: plants, animals, etc.
Abiotic: These are those components that are non-living. Examples: sand, stone, etc.
Characteristics of organisms:
Food—all organisms need food to be alive. In chapters 1 and 2 of class 6 science, we study about food and its components. It will help to grow organisms.
Show Growth: All biotic organisms grow.
Respire: All biotic respire animals, and humans take oxygen.
Stimuli: An organization gets reacted to when some change in the surroundings is called a stimulus.
Excretion: Waste material getting out of an organism’s body is called excretion.
Reproduce: an organism able to produce the same themselves.
Movements: Most organisms get moved from one place to another, but plants don’t get moved; they still stand at one place. But many nutrients inside plants get moved from one part to another part of the plant.
